Why Visit Vancouver?
Vancouver was voted the
"Best City in the Americas" for 2004 and 2005 by Condé Nast
Traveler magazine, based on the categories of ambience,
friendliness, culture and sites, restaurants, lodging, and
shopping. This is just one of our city's many awards and
accolades that clearly demonstrate the many reasons to visit
Vancouver!
Vancouver is a dynamic,
multicultural city set in a spectacular natural environment.
No matter what time of the year you visit, there are indoor
and outdoor activities to please adults, families, couples
and friends to no end. As the proud host of the 2010 Olympic
& Paralympic Winter Games, Vancouver looks ahead to ongoing
growth and great success in tourism, hospitality and
business services each year. |

The International Olympic Committee selected Vancouver as
the Host City for the XXI Winter Games. Athletes and
spectators from around the world will gather in Vancouver
and the alpine resort of Whistler in 2010 to celebrate the
Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Selected for its

Vancouver looks forward to hosting the world!

Spectacular & Safe Setting
- Majestic mountains, sparkling ocean, rainforests and
beautiful foliage all four seasons makes Vancouver one of
the most beautiful cities in the world. Canada is known for
our people's friendly nature, and Vancouver's citizens take
great pride in our welcoming, clean, safe streets - day or
night, all year round. |

Many visitors are
instantly drawn to the picturesque walkways along
the sea, lush forest paths or spectacular mountain
walking and hiking paths when interested in taking a
walk in Vancouver. However, there is so much to see
in the city itself, especially for those interested
in architecture and the city's heritage, here are
just a few ideas. |

Chinatown is not just a great destination
for shopping, but the sights, sounds and heritage
buildings of the area are worth a walk around! |
|
Gastown is well known for its history, and
guided tours are available through a number of
companies showing off the world-renowned steam
clock, cobbled streets, and impressive heritage
buildings. |

Welcoming & Accessible
- A vast multicultural population, endless activities, and
excellent infrastructure, Vancouver is welcoming to all -
families, couples, gay & lesbian travelers, and special
needs visitors - everything is within reach. The Vancouver
International Airport has consistently been rated as a top
North American airport providing easy access from all over
the world. Exceptional public transportation is overshadowed
slightly by the convenience of Vancouver as a great walking
city - clean, green, safe, and easily accessible!

Officially Eastside Vancouver, by car about 15 minutes to the
city centre, 20 mins to the airport, and about 35mins to/from the US Border. The
suite is in the area know as Commercial Drive, "The Drive" with its cosmopolitan
mix of trendy through Bohemian to Grunge residents and visitors. Located just
far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Downtown it provides a more
gentle, quieter way of life. The immediate area has local individually run
convenience shops, plus locally run grocery stores, Pubs and Restaurants,
clothing, furniture stores. The whole area can be walked easily, nothing is very
far away.
A short ride by Bus or Car, or a
significant walk will take you to the waterfront, where
bicycle and walking paths on the seawall will thread you
along the edge of False Creek, past the English Bay Beaches,
around Stanley Park, under the Lions Gate Bridge and
alongside the First Narrows inlet and the new community of
Coal Harbour - or by turning in the other direction - to
Granville Island on the south side of False Creek. |

Gay Vancouver Vancouver's vibrant and
active gay community is centered around the city's trendy West End,
especially along Davie Street. Comprised of fashionable clothing stores,
eclectic dining and energetic clubs, Davie Village has become a hub for
locals and visitors seeking a community of like-minded individuals.
Every August, the area comes alive with Pride Week. Highlighted by a
colourful and electric parade, the festival draws over 100,000
spectators and shines the spotlight on Vancouver's proud gay community.
Vancouver Pride Week Pride Week is the chance for Vancouver's proud gay
community to stand up and be noticed. The Terminal City's well-organized
festival is one of the largest and most anticipated gay and lesbian
festivals in the world. With a myriad of events, from boat cruises to
all-night dance parties - even a gala ball, there is never a shortage of
things to do. The highlight of the week is the Vancouver Pride Parade.
The colourful progression makes its way along the picturesque route from
Denman to Pacific and along the waterfront street to Sunset Park. Over
150,000 spectators watched last year as fantastic floats, bands and a
multitude of gay & lesbians |

Davie Village The West End of Vancouver is one
of the most densely populated areas in North America. Stylish high-rise condos
housing young professionals spring up between lush greenspaces and beachfront
parks. In the heart of the West End lies Davie Village. The centre of Gay
culture in Vancouver, Davie Village is home to countless fashionable stores,
cool pubs, fantastic restaurants, and a great mix of nightclubs. A laid back,
gay-friendly attitude makes this strip great for shopping, dining or for hanging
out and people watching. Night Life With an eclectic selection of places to go,
gay nightlife in Vancouver is something to talk about. Make your way along Davie
Street and into Numbers (1042 Davie St,), Vancouver's cruisy dance bar or try
The Pump Jack Pub (1167 Davie St.) for a few drinks and friendly atmosphere.
Dance the night away at the Odyssey Night Club (1251 Howe St.) a hip bar that
attracts a young crowd with its energetic DJ's. Gay Marriages in Vancouver
Vancouver is becoming a premier destination for gay couples wishing to tie the
knot thanks to a progressive decision made by the provincial government on July
8, 2003. Lawmakers enacted legislation allowing same sex couples to become
legally married. Gay or lesbian couples don't have to be residents of the
province. The law only requires both parties to be over 19 years of age and
single. A marriage license (purchased at insurance offices and from notary
publics) and a civil service performed by appointed Marriage Commissioners are
all that is required to become legally married in the province. |

Granville Island is a major attraction, housing The Emily
Carr Institute of Fine Art, and a host of independent
artisan's craft shops, plus many, many other small
businesses - art galleries, a dive shop where you can sign
up for underwater training, boat and bicycle rentals,
Restaurants and Pubs.
For the 'locals' the Farmer's Market is the big
attraction, with fresh everything - Seafood, meat, fruit and
vegetables, baked goods and great coffee. Eat in, take out,
fast food, name it, it is there.
|
|
A small brightly coloured shuttle ferry for pedestrians -
bikes too if not too crowded - will get you from one side of
the creek to the other if you don't want to go all the way
around. Routes to Granville Island, Stamps Landing (and Monk
McQueens restaurant thrust out into the water), the Maritime
Museum is a pleasant few minutes escape from the bustle of
the city. |
