The annual Easter Parade is
a chance for New Orleans' gay community to demonstrate their
party spirit and creativity. With the epic Mardi Gras
celebrations only 40-odd days before, it's a wonder that the
New Orleans scene has enough energy left to put on another
party. But in the true spirit of the French Quarter, Bourbon
St and its 24-hour party ethos, there's always room for
another big parade. Recommended parade attire includes
tuxedos, summer suits, Easter dresses and, of course, Easter
bonnets. Be warned however - nudity or partial nudity is not
permitted. |

The city's wildest
neighborhood gets even crazier as the French Quarter is packed
for the entire Southern Decadence event; however, the big day is
the Sunday before Labor Day. That's when the Grand Marshal
leads the annual parade through the streets. Tradition dictates
that the previous year's Grand Marshal choose their successor, a
well guarded secret until the annual coronation ceremony in
July. Grand Marshal honors for 2005 were shared by Lisa Beaumann
and Regina Adams. The theme was "Jazz and Jezebels" and the
colors were red and purple. |

The corner of Bourbon and St. Ann Streets
is generally considered to be the epicenter of Gay New Orleans, and even
more so during the Southern Decadence festival weekend. At that intersection
is the largest gay nightclub, The Bourbon Pub video bar and The Parade dance
club, which is home to the hottest dancers in town. Across the street is Hit
Parade Gift and Clothing store. Most of the city's main gay attractions are
located within a few blocks of this intersection. Check out our French
Quarter Map. |

Most street party activities take place in
the immediate area of the French Quarter, and the dance parties are in the
clubs. And since the gay bars never close, there is something happening
around the clock. Some of the nation's best DJs work the crowds into a
frenzy. In the past, Southern Decadence circuit party DJs have included
Warren Gluck, Lydia Prim, Joe Gauthreaux, Rick Mitchell, Max Rodriguez,
Darren Thomas and Jayskee. No wonder the weekend is often referred to as
Southern DecaDANCE! |
